The 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine in the GX lineup makes 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Certainly, there are more powerful four-cylinders on the market, including Toyota’s own Camry, which has a 3.5-liter V6 engine, but the GX is all about comfort and dependability over speed and performance. These engines aren’t the most cutting-edge, but they have shown themselves to be reliable and quiet. Although the engine is capable of hauling and off-roading, it can’t do it at a speed that’s fast enough.
If you’re not in a rush and don’t mind watching your fuel gauge sink like a stone to the bottom of a lake, getting around town shouldn’t be too difficult. Passing at highway speeds requires not just a lot of throttle, but also a second mortgage on your house if you want to keep up. Everyone but accountants would appreciate an additional 50 horsepower.
